Burnout

What is Burnout?

Burnout is the experience of extreme physical and emotional exhaustion to the extent that life feels completely numb and hopeless. Burnout is often experienced in situations which consume all of your time, energy and capacity. Essentially your body lives under a state of constant stress.

Burnout impacts your body physically as a result of the constant stress hormones flooding it. This means, that while you may believe that your work or role or experience impacts your mind only, your body may be under attack and respond with physical symptoms that make daily life difficult. Over time, it may seem to change everything about youreslf.

Burnout is common within situations of caregiving, work or other stress intense roles.

    Benefits of counselling

In some cases, it may be simply helpful to voice how you feel, particularly where there may be guilt or shame surrounding your burnout. Recognising your need to revive your wellbeing is an important step. A part of this is understanding that your experience is a normal response to prolonged and intense stress. Counselling will aim to build self-compassion so that you can start rebuilding your wellbeing.

Through the counselling process, you may work on skills and a plan for ways to manage your life roles and tasks, your time and your own needs differently. An outside perspective may help to prioritise realistically and help identify boundaries and options which may readjust your position in a beneficial way.
